Parents supporting TeachersParents want the absolute best for their children. They want their children to be successful in life and realize that they must first succeed in the classroom. Parents want their students to know that education is important and sometimes that means getting involved in their kid’s school themselves to indicate the value of education. However, that’s easier said than done many times as schools don’t always have opportunities for parents to easily engage in meaningful ways. That is changing this year at Brook Avenue Elementary school. On the first Friday of November, Brook Avenue hosted a Teacher Gratitude Workshop so that parents could express their appreciation for teachers. Prior to the workshop, teachers selected small projects that would be nice to have parents help complete. At the workshop, parents worked on these small projects such as laminating, cutting, and sorting materials for teacher’s lessons. Parents recognize that teachers have a lot on their plate and this is one small way they can help support the work they do. Because of this, other workshops are planned in the future to continue to help support teachers on campus. In addition, parents recognize that when they choose to be engaged in this way on campus, they are showing their children that education is important. 4We are grateful for schools like Brook Avenue in our community and the parents there who are making a difference in their children’s school and future. Congratulations Cuevas Peacock! We are proud of you!Meet Mr. Cuevas Peacock, our 2018 Rising Star! Mr. Peacock will be honored at our upcoming 2018 CTAACC Annual Meeting & Awards Banquet on November 15th!Cuevas Peacock is a community builder with dreams of becoming a poet, for he was once told that they are life’s last true teachers. Hailing from Port Arthur, Texas, the only place where oil and water mixes, he originally came to Waco to serve as an AmeriCorps VISTA with City Center Waco. During his time with City Center Waco, he implemented the first Workshop in Business Opportunities (WIBO) program in the state of Texas falling in love with the city of Waco in the process. Growing up in Port Arthur, Cuevas discovered his passion for service while working with his home church’s feeding and clothing ministries. It was a passion he sought to cultivate while attending THE Texas Southern University and serving with several on-campus organizations in the surrounding Third Ward community. After earning a degree in Public Affairs, Cuevas returned home to Port Arthur where he worked with the local school district and various nonprofit agencies. Through his role with each of these entities, he spearheaded numerous initiatives that engaged, educated, and advocated for the local community around issues of youth development, criminal justice and access to healthy food. Cuevas subscribes to the belief that strong people do not need strong leaders and is able to live out this mantra through his work as a Community Organizer with Grassroots Community Development. Through this role, he is able to work alongside the East Waco community to enact locally driven change with residents, neighborhood associations, schools, community organization’s churches, and businesses. Cuevas is certified by the Community Development Institute as a Professional Community and Economic Developer and is currently in pursuit of his Masters of Social Impact from Claremont Lincoln University. ...
