Committed to a brighter future for children, neighbors and communities.

We consider a healthy neighborhood to be one that is safe, clean, and diverse; one in which it makes economic sense for people to invest and one where neighbors manage change successfully.

About Grassroots Community Development

Our Mission

Committed to a brighter future for children, neighbors and communities.

Organization Overview

As an organization, Grassroots originally served Waco through building and remodeling homes. Over time, the organization has come to understand that cultivating healthy neighborhoods is more than just building attractive and affordable homes. Grassroots utilizes an asset-based community development approach to serve neighbors, children, and communities. Neighbors are served through leadership development training classes, free financial literacy and homebuyer education, and counseling to prepare families to become homeowners. Children are served academically through fostering family engagement efforts and school-community partnerships. Communities are served through roof and exterior home repair programs, building new homes and community enhancement projects.

Racial Equity Statement

Grassroots Community Development is committed to a brighter future for children, neighbors, and communities. We believe this requires a commitment to racial diversity, inclusion, and equity. To Grassroots, equity and inclusion means creating environmental conditions where all people are valued and have the ability to thrive within our community, regardless of their race or ethnicity.

In order to support the advancement of our community, Grassroots provides:

  • Family engagement support at community schools
  • Grassroots Leadership Training with neighborhood leaders
  • Support to community driven projects
  • Financial literacy courses
  • New home construction for low to moderate income families

Building intentional and authentic relationships with neighbors through these programs is at the heart of what Grassroots Community Development does.

Last Friday was a busy time of celebratory events in East Waco. JH Hines hosted a Muffins for Moms event, where over 100 moms, grandmothers, aunties, sisters, and mother figures attended. Community partners and other volunteers also showed up to support this effort.
At the same time, just across West Waco Drive, was the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the new GW Carver Middle School. Alumni, current students and staff, public officials,Waco ISD, residents and other community members gathered for this historical event. We enjoyed being able to participate and support these exciting moments.
