Parent University at Alta Vista
A partnership between Transformation Waco and Grassroots has helped us advance in
our mission of commitment to a brighter future for children, neighbors, and communities.
Parent University got its official start in January at Alta Vista Elementary. This program
is focused on providing the parents and caregivers of students in TW campuses an
opportunity to learn more about ideas, topics, or themes they’re interested in at no cost
to the family. Some of the goals for Parent University include equipping parents with
knowledge on different topics and resources available to them and encouraging a love
for learning for parents and their students.
Since January, there have been three Parent University classes with the topics ranging
from “Credit-Building 101” to “Learning 3 rd , 4 th , and 5 th Grade-Level math” to “Continuing
Education for Adults”. These courses have begun equipping parents with skills that are
useful in supporting their child’s education and in providing further learning about how
the community can continue supporting TW families.
A special thanks to Alta Vista Elementary, who worked alongside Grassroots to host,
teach, and plan the courses provided. We would also like to thank our various speakers
– Alta Vista teachers, our Grassroots’ housing counselor, UpSkill Waco, Trio at MCC,
and La Puerta, who have taught the courses over the past couple of months.
We are so excited to begin planning Parent University for the next school year. We are
even more excited to see the learning that comes along with it!
