Parents and caregivers play a pivotal role in their students’ school lives. Studies show engaged parents and caregivers lead to “better academic performance, fewer behavior problems, higher grades and test scores, better attendance, and students are more likely to enroll in high-level programs, complete high school, and post-secondary education.” Parent, caregiver, and family engagement can differ according to the needs and priorities.
Grassroots has partnered with Transformation Waco to support parent and caregiver engagement with Parent and Child Time Together (PACTT) and Parent University. Both programs are rooted in the Community School model, emphasizing active family and community engagement. PACTT supports a safe space where families can learn together and enjoy meals with their school community. During PACTT, families learn from our Grassroots Leadership Training and community organizations’ services. They also connect with school staff who are eager to grow family and community engagement. PACTT meetings this year have welcomed 25+ people to each meeting!
Parent University emphasizes learning for parents and caregivers. Topics covered so far this year include school-focused advocacy. Parents and caregivers have learned about the importance of vaccines for their students, how to access and use school communication methods, and how to advocate for their students on campus. Parent University focuses on making education available and accessible to all.
These partnerships have been invaluable in connecting with the Waco community. As organizers, we eagerly seek spaces that support an environment of empowerment for the community. Family and school partnerships are essential for a community’s flourishing. If you want to learn more about PACTT or Parent University, please contact us at (254) 235-7358.
