This past fall, Grassroots was privileged to team up with local muralist Vincent Thomas to provide leadership training for a group of young artists participating in Thomas’ art mentorship program, called “A Beautiful Message.”
A Beautiful Message sought to equip 6 artists, aged 15-20, with the confidence and skills necessary to use art to transform their lives and their communities. To that end, the program sponsored individual exhibits for each artist as well as the creation of a mural painted on the side of the Jockey Club Barber Shop on Elm Street in East Waco. The artists also received a 5-session course of Grassroots’ Leadership Training. Participants in the training learned about communication, conflict resolution, identity, relationships, and more important topics.
At the end of the leadership training sessions, participants told us they were excited to turn talk into action by sponsoring new clubs or initiatives at their schools. This work highlights the importance of collaborative efforts to develop emerging leaders across a variety of different ages, spaces, and industries in Waco. Through our partnership with Vincent and his “A Beautiful Message” program, Grassroots was able to reach a class of wonderful, talented, and engaged young leaders. We’re so excited to see what they accomplish next!
The arts play an important role in cultivating flourishing, beautiful, and active neighborhoods. Next time you’re on Elm Street, be sure to check out the many murals and public art exhibitions and consider the ways they pay homage to the neighborhood’s rich history while working towards a bright future. We’re so grateful to Vincent and the “A Beautiful Message” artists for their collaboration with Grassroots and their support of the East Waco community!
