Committed to a brighter future for children, neighbors and communities.

We consider a healthy neighborhood to be one that is safe, clean, and diverse; one in which it makes economic sense for people to invest and one where neighbors manage change successfully.

Business Spotlight: Jockey Club

The Jockey Club Barber Shop opened its doors for the first time in 1920, becoming the first black-owned barber shop in Waco. A community staple for over a century, the Jockey Club has weathered the infamous 1953 tornado, its forced relocation as a result of Urban Renewal, and the COVID-19 pandemic. The barbershop is diligently managed by its long-time family owner, Ms. Iva Smith.

The Jockey Club is a vibrant hub of community conversation, hospitality, and leadership. Its exterior walls are adorned by murals depicting the barbershop’s past, present, and future. The faces of several past barbers painted onto the metal siding of the building can be seen by passersby on Elm St. Next to them stands a new mural painted by a group of young artists mentored by muralist Vincent Thomas as part of an art mentorship program. Grassroots partnered with this art mentorship program to provide leadership training to the young artists.

The Jockey Club remains a local business dedicated to offering opportunity to patrons and barbers alike. It is a symbol of resilience and strength through many challenges. And, it offers excellent cuts, vibrant conversation, and neighborhood beauty. Stop by at 809 Elm Ave. to support one of your local barbershops!
